I first started on the Sweet N' Sour Kisses series, I had been looking for some teen fiction I could enjoy. Most of it just did not suit my taste. When I came across Cindy's books, they were different; there were guidelines to these teens' lives and morals at stake, and I was hooked with First Kiss. As I continued the series, I began to try other genres in between the books of this series. In the process I discovered some books I really liked or at least enjoyed the challenge of reading even if my overall opinion of said books wasn't great.
Coming back to finish up this series has been a bit of a bummer. I think these books would still be great for the teen age group or those who truly enjoy teen fiction. (I have never been a true fan. It was more "wishful thinking" than anything. I just couldn't make it work. :/ )
I've found myself just kind of waiting out the events of books #2-4 so I can find out how everything turns out for Brooklyn in book #5. I'm almost there!
In Book #4 Rejected Kiss, Brooklyn and her best friend Ali decide to become more visible to boys. They begin by asking dates to the next girl's choice dance. After having a great time, the two wait in growing horror to be asked to prom. Neither girl gets asked out until the last minute, finally being saved by two cute guys. They all go as friends. A series of crazy and funny events occur as part of the prom date, including Brooklyn getting stuck in a wetsuit when their group goes snorkeling. At the close of the evening, Brooklyn leans in for a kiss and finds herself...rejected. Her date, Cal, confesses to never having kissed a girl and wanting to save his first kiss for someone he shares something deeply with.
This final moment could have been one of big embarrassment for Brooklyn, but she ends up realizing that she can reclaim her own values about kissing, even though she has already given her first kiss away.
Brooklyn also learns something surprising about her previous crush, Ryker, when he takes her on a date to a ballgame.
At the end of Rejected Kiss, Brooklyn continues to date Cal casually, both of them also seeing other people, and she decides not to get seriously involved with another guy any time soon. Well, she's a teenage girl. We'll see how long that vow lasts.
